The government has approved a sum of Rs. 100 million for the purchase of plastic containers to transport vegetables and fruit.

Damage caused to vegetables and fruit during transportation costs Rs. 20 billion a year and to curtail the waste and financial losses, the Cabinet recently decided to assist the producers and traders by supplying them with plastic containers at reduced rates.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had a discussion recently with trader representatives at the Manning Market and Economic Centres and decided to provide farmers and vegetable and fruit traders with plastic containers at 50 per cent of the actual cost.

He has informed the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando of his decision.

The Consumer Affairs Authorities (CAA) has already gazetted the new laws regarding the collection, transportation, storage, distribution and sale of vegetables and fruits in suitable containers. Legal action is to be taken against those who fail to adhere to the new laws.

The government has also decided to supply plastic containers (50 Kg and 30 Kg) to the farmers and transporters initially.
