A mother and her 15-year-old daughter were found brutally hacked to death inside their house at Nilwella, Duwagahawella in Dickwella yesterday.

Police said the two victims, P. K. Renuka Damayanthi (43) and Sanduni Sasanthika Ratnayake, a GCE Ordinary Level student had been killed on Friday night. The motive behind the slayings is still not known.

The bodies were found in two separate places in the house — the mother lying on the floor of a room and the daughter on the bed of another room where she usually slept. Deep slashes were found on the neck and face of the young girl.

Police have taken in for questioning an Italian national and a woman who was living with him.

Investigations have revealed that the woman hacked to death, had some years back separated from her husband and lived with the Italian who had come to Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami. Later, he had built a house for this woman and her daughter and moved out to live with another woman.

Matara Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga inspected the scene of the double murder yesterday and directed the police to arrest and produce the suspects in court.

He also directed that post-mortems be conducted on the bodies and a report submitted to court.

A police team led by Dickwella OIC CI Niroshan Dharmasena is conducting investigations under the direction of SSP (Matara) Sumith Edirisinghe.
