Trincomalee Port Development: Land survey prior to leasing

By Pabodha Hettige

A survey of lands in the vicinity of the Trincomalee Harbour will be conducted prior to leasing them to investors to set up projects, Resident Manager of the Trincomalee port J. A. Chandrarathne said. He told The Island that the survey of nearly 5,000 acres of land would be completed in six months.

However, he said, some of the lands, close to the Trincomalee main road, are owned by the residents and the port authorities had made no plans to acquire them since they would need only the innermost lands to carry out port related business activities.

The lands surrounding the port will be used for port related business ventures and the lands in the vicinity to establish businesses generating employment opportunities for the local residents, while the lands in the beach areas will be used for tourism development purposes.

"We have already received investment proposals for a cement manufacturing plant and investments related to the oil industry," he said.

The Trinco port had not been fully utilized due to the war and ship arrivals were less due to lack of industries functioning at the moment. "Once the port related activities are implemented, the authorities will look forward to the arrival of ships and the investors will be given opportunities to suggest development plans for the port," Chandrarathne said.
