Ranil demands Select Committee on foul petrol

By Piyasena Dissanayake

UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday demanded that a parliamentary select committee be appointed with regard to importing substandard petrol.

Wickremesinghe said that he would request the government to consider the appointment of the PSC as an urgent matter and that this suggestion requesting the appointment of the relevant Select Committee will be handed over to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa this week.

Addressing a party rally held at Warakapola, Wickremesinghe said that he would make this request so that the Speaker with powers vested in him under the Standing Orders withhold the debates scheduled to be taken up and make the appointment of the committee.

If the government rejects his request then the Opposition would lead masses onto the streets against a government which protects those guilty of importing substandard fuel and releasing it to the market.

The Opposition Leader said that neither the government nor powerful persons could be allowed to rob the people’s money by this type of corrupt deals. The government had engaged in massive corruption and there were information that there had been unprecedented levels of corruptions and frauds in mega development projects launched by the government.

He pointed out that the government, the subject minister, and officials have issued contradictory statements with regard to the issue at hand and the people have a right to know the truth of what went wrong to create this crisis.
