A third of Nation building tax to PCs

by Saman Indrajith

Deputy Finance Minister Geethanjana Gunwardena told Parliament yesterday that the government would direct one third of the revenue drawn from the Nation Building Tax to Provincial Councils. That would be in compensation for the removal of powers, by the 2011 budget, from the provincial councils to levy business turnover taxes he said.

The government had taken action to remove the business turnover taxes collected by the revenue departments of the provincial councils and amalgamated it with the National Building Tax levied by the Central Government, he said.

Following that, the employees who worked at the revenue departments of the provincial councils had been employed in other departments, the Deputy Minister said adding that the government had proposed to absorb them into the Inland Revenue Department, but the trade unions had opposed it.

Deputy Minister Gunawardena made these observations in response to a question raised by UNP MP Eran Wickremaratne.
