Juvenile kills another over punting dispute

A juvenile who was taken into custody in connection with the murder of another youth was produced before Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne last Tuesday (19). He was accused of striking a person with a stone over an altercation at a bookie.

The Magistrate observed that the Attorney General’s advice had been sought on whether the case could be heard in the High Court and re-remanded the suspect till July 28.

When the case was taken up witness Thusara Dharmapala testifying admitted that he himself was a punter and the incident took place at a bookie operated by a leading bookmaker.

He had visited the bookie at noon. There was an altercation between the punters in the bookie. When the bookie was closed for the day, he came out and had walked a distance when some of the punters came up to him saying that one Irresamy Louis Aiya had fallen on the road and was bleeding.

When he went to the spot, he saw someone lying on the road.

The Magistrate issued notice on seven other witnesses to the incident.

The suspect was re remanded at Makola Children’s Home.

The case was adjourned till July 28.
