The UNP yesterday selected former Western Provincial Councillor A. J. M. Muzammil to be its Mayoral candidate for the forthcoming Colombo Municipal Council elections ahead of other aspirants Mohammed Mahroof, Karunasena Kodituwakku Y. P. Ram and Imitiaz Bakeer Markar.
Informed sources told The Island that Muzammil had resigned from the Western Provincial Council yesterday, while a disappointed Maharoof was expected to join the UPFA.
The Nomination Board had also interviewed former Minister Kodituwakku and Western Provincial Councillor Ram, before selecting Muzammil, sources said.
The Sajith Group’s nominee Imthiaz Bakeer Markar was not called for an interview.
Muzammil,a confidant of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, was the first choice right along, but with the nomination of Milinda Moragoda as the UPFA’s Mayoral candidate, some UNP seniors were of the view that Kodituwakku would be a better opponent. However, the Nomination Board had eventually decided to field Muzammil.
Meanwhile,UPFA sources said that Azath Sally, who had earlier threatened not to contest the polls after having to failed to secure nomination as Mayoral candidate, was likely to be on the party’s Colombo list.
With the alleged case of cheating filed by an Health Ministry employee against Sally, expected to be withdrawn, the path would be cleared for him to contest for a seat in the CMC, sources said
The UNP’s General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that they were confident of winning a majority of the 23 LG including Colombo at the polls in October.
