KANDY: The recently appointed Auditor General H. A. S. Samaraweera said in Kandy that he intended to launch a website that would enable the public to have access to reports of audits conducted by the Auditor General’s Department.

Samaraweera, who is the 39th holder of the office of the Auditor General, briefed the media after calling on the Mahanayake Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya on Thursday (8).

He said his department could only investigate the financial management and discrepancies in the State sector but had no powers to take any action. The reports are forwarded to the Parliament and the Select Committee is responsible for taking action, Samaraweera said.

He said that a new Bill will be introduced in Parliament to revitalise the work of the Auditor General’s Department.

He said he wanted to include members of other professions such as engineers in the Auditor General’s Department as in many other countries. Currently, the department is limited to those who possess auditing qualifications.

The new Auditor General told the Most Ven. Mahanayaka Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera that his department performed the duties very independently without interference from others. President Mahinda Rajapksa never interfered, he said.

His department carried out investigations even on complaints by the public regarding corruption in many State departments. Some of those involved in corruption, as in the case of vat scam, have opened hotels with about 800 rooms in Middle East countries, Samaraweera told the Mahanayake Thera.

Most Ven. Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thera said in the government sector there was massive corruption. Two thirds of the allocation of funds on a project went underground. Only one third was spent on the project.

The Prelate advised the Auditor General to investigate and bring to light the corrupt persons fearlessly. He said his blessings were with the department.

Samaraweera called on the prelate of Malwatta Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera.
