The Parliamentary Council yesterday approved the recommendation made by the President to appoint Ms. Eva Wanasundera PC as the Attorney General.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced the Council decision to Parliament.

Ms. Wanasundera has been acting as the AG since the retirement of Mohan Pieris at the end of last month. With her appointment by the Parliamentary Council she became the first woman AG of Sri Lanka.

Earlier, she became the first woman Solicitor General of Sri Lanka when the incumbent, Priyasath Dep PC, was elevated to the Supreme Court.

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution has mandated the Parliamentary Council to make key appointments.

The Council includes Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, UPFA parliamentarian A. H. M. Azwer and UNP parliamentarian D. M. Swaminathan.

Wickremasinghe and Swaminathan however, do not attend the Council meetings since their party opposes the 18th Amendment in principle.
