Ranil, Sajith have  different agendas - Rajitha

By Ifham Nizam

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP co-deputy leader Sajith Premadasa were working on different agendas in the run-up to the Municipal Council Elections and that could divide the party into several factions, said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Rajitha Senaratne.

Addressing the media at the Mahaweli Centre in Colombo yesterday, Senaratne said Wickremesinghe had kept the Colombo Municipal Council under his purview and gave the other councils to co-deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya, knowing well that defeat would bring Karu into disrepute.

"The main Opposition Party has become weaker and it faces internal problems over leadership. The UNP is divided. Colombo is the only Municipal Council the UNP usually wins but even there it is uncertain," he added.

The UNP had won the Colombo Municipality at previous elections but this time it would lose because the team which it had fielded was not strong enough to rival the UPFA, he added.
