Funds for paddy released to banks by Treasury

The funds released on Tuesday (13) by the Treasury to the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) has already being directed to the State banks to pay the farmers for the purchase of paddy.

Chairman of the PMB K. B. Jayasinghe told The Island that the farmers should have no fear regarding the purchase of their produce by the PMB which will honour every single payment.

He said that Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has issued a directive to pay the farmers without any delay for paddy that has been purchased.

Meanwhile, 50,445 metric tones of paddy has been purchased by the PMB at a cost of Rs. 1,434 million so far.

Jayasinghe said that it was a canard spread by unscrupulous persons that storage facilities were not available and even if they were full, there were new storage facilities available. On Minister Fernando’s instructions paddy will be purchased from the farmers without any hindrance, he said.
