Around 35,000 houses would be built in the city of Colombo within three years for the benefit of slum and shanty dwellers, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Mayoral candidate Milinda Moragoda said.

Addressing the media at the Mahaweli Centre, Moragoda said that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, in keeping with his vision, had already done a remarkable service to make Colombo a clean and beautiful city.

All Muslims and Tamils were fully satisfied with the government’s development programme, Technology and Research Deputy Minister Faizer Musthapa, who was present, said.

Musthapa said that the UPFA was confident of a landslide victory for the first time in Colombo at the upcoming Local Government elections on Oct. 08.

Musthapa requested the voters of Colombo to rise above partisan politics and cast their votes for the candidate who had the ability to develop Colombo to its full potential.

Musthapa pointed out that most of the Muslims will vote for Milinda Moragoda. The UPFA mayoral candidate has been fielded by a government that has done its duty by all communities, he said.

Parliamentarian Prabha Ganeshan pledged his support to Moragoda at the upcoming election. He called upon all Muslim and Tamil people to rally round the UPFA and help it develop Colombo city to fulfill pledges.

Ganeshan appreciated what he called valuable service rendered by the government to the estate workers. They will not ask anything from the government. He said pledging unconditional support to the government.

"UNP would not be able to win the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) it has lost popular support," he said.
