Removal of State property from SJGH detected

A racket involving the removal of State property, worth over Rs. 03 million, from the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) was detected by an alert member of the Board of Management on Tuesday (20).

Informed sources told The Island that parts from the old air handling unit catering to the main operating theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), labour room, X’ray unit and CSSD unit, had been removed.

He said that items, including glass wool panels, box and pre-filters, GI pipes, blower fans, cooling condensers, had been taken out on a gate pass issued by SJGH authorities on August 03 and another consignment, including cooler box, iron  frames, three-phase motors, fan frames, idle frames and iron beds were taken out on August 05, he said adding that the Board of Management had taken a unanimous decision and directed the SJGH Director Dr. Savindra Gamage to inform the Mirihana Police of the racket.

Dr. Gamage told The Island that he had scrutinised the relevant file and the items were all old electrical goods approved by the tender board to be taken away. He valued the items at Rs. 500,000 and said that the gate pass had been signed by the foreman, engineer, supplies officer and himself. He said that the matter would be referred to the Police.
