Excise Commissoner agrees to revoke licence to liquor store near sacred place

By Chitra Weerarathne

The Excise Commissioner will revoke the licence given to liquor outlet located close to sacred places and schools, and will consider public opinion on the issue, Additional Solicitor General Uanjan Wijayatillake P.C., said in the Court of Appeal yesterday.

In this case the Excise Commissioner has been made the first respondent, in the Writ application filed by Ven. Randuwe Gunanda Thera of Purana Viharaya Wadduwa and Ven. Wadduwe Dharmawansa Thera of Sri Lankaramaya, Wadduwa.

The petitioners had complained that the wine store at premises No. 645 of Wadduwa Town is too close to sacred places and girls schools, hence the court should issue a writ of certiorari, to quash the decision of the commissioner to issue this licence.

The petition was supported by Saliya Pieris.

When the Excise Commissioner gave the undertaking to revoke the licence, and consider public opinion, the petitioner withdrew the writ application. The withdrawal was allowed by the Court. The Bench comprised Justice W. L. Ranjith Silva and Justice Nalin Perera.
