Timely action by the Kollupitiya Traffic Police helped avert disaster when two approaching trains were stopped just metres away from a CTB bus loaded with school girls stalled on the railway track, police said.

The incident occurred on (19) near the Rhineland Place in Kollupitiya.

The bus was carrying a group of pupils and teachers of Methodis College.

The bus travelling at high speed had veered off the newly built Marine Drive running parallel to the coastline before landing on the trail track amidst screams from students.

Traffic policemen on duty sensing approaching danger wasted no time and rushed in opposite directions.

Their frantic waving stopped two approaching trains from opposite tracks metres.

Police investigations have revealed that the driver could not control the bus.

The driver, Chintaka Sisirakumara, was taken into custody and was produced before Colombo Traffic Court No 7 and remanded.

Investigations are being conducted by IP Indunil Ranaweera PC 63614 Pradeep and PC 5783 Pushpakumara.
