Somawansa faction probes dissidents’ ‘RAW’ links

Loyalists of JVP leader Somawansa Amerasinghe allege that their rival faction was being backed, most probably, by the Indian intelligence agency ‘Research and Analysis Wing’ (RAW).

JVP trade union wing leader K. D. Lal Kantha, in a brief interview with The Island yesterday, said that the party had launched a probe to ascertain whether ‘RAW’ or any other foreign intelligence outfit was behind the JVP dissidents.

Lal Kantha sought to dismiss the strength of the dissident group as a miniscule faction consisting mainly of students manipulated by some external forces bent on destroying the JVP. "Our party has been consistently opposed to Indian expansionism and intervention in the affairs of this country. Therefore, we have reason to believe that ‘RAW’ is behind the dissidents trying to ruin the party."

Lal Kantha, who is in charge of the JVP’s security division, said there was also a strong possibility that some other forces such as the government, the UNP or even the CIA could be backing the party rebels.

The party leadership had kept a close tab on the activities of the dissidents for the past few years and there was evidence that they were advancing an anti-national agenda.

Asked what action the party would take against the dissidents, a smiling Lal Kantha said they had already left the party and they would be officially expelled at a national convention.

"We had in fact been mulling over sacking them but before we could make a final decision, they staged a coup and left the party," Lal Kantha said of the party dissidents.
