Shaped akin to the IPL (Indian Premier League) where it’ll be the first rugby tournament of its kind in the world, Carlton Super sevens 2011-which consists of 10 franchises- organized by Carlton Sports Club for the third consecutive year, will commence on October 29.

The tournament consists of two legs and the first leg will be at Nittawela, Kandy on October 29 and 30 while 2nd leg will be played on November 5 and 6 at Royal Sports Complex in Colombo.

The previous two tournaments had 19 overseas teams competing and this year’s edition will be a step forward in the direction of developing rugby. The tournament’s format has been revamped according to the IPL and it’ll benefit the local players and the array of international stars who will take part. The local players include young players from all over the island and those getting to know and learn from the best players abroad shall be a wonderful experience. Each franchise should have an under 21 player on the field all the time while teams should consist of 3 foreign players and only two can play at any given time.

Among the objectives of Carlton in holding a tournament of this magnitude are taking rugby to across island whilst educating the public about the sport, create local and international rugby icons with commercial and brand value within the respective provinces of the country-something that IPL has done to a certain degree in India.

The teams will be coached by some top coaches in the world who are sure to impart great knowledge about the game to the local talents. Those include Al Caravelli, Paul John, Chris Roche, Iliesa Tanivula, Pedro Fernandes, Scott Pierce, Paul Claridge and Waisale Serevi. Some of the foreign players who are set to take the island by storm include Amasio Valance, Nalu Tuigamala, Edwin Cocker, Rocky Khan, Lance Macdonald and Zar Lawrence.

Elephant House, Samsung mobile and Keells under John Keells group is the platinum sponsor while Etisalat has come forward as the official communications partner. The event will be covered by Sri Lanka’s sports network CSN and Youth Radio joins as the official radio partner.
