Somawansa, Tilvin ditched by their docs

By Saman Indrajith

A majority of the doctors affiliated to the JVP, including the two specialists treating incumbent leader Somawansa Amarasinghe and General Secretary Tilvin Silva, have joined the party’s dissident group.

They announced their allegiance to the party rebels during a meeting held at the party head office yesterday morning, party sources said.

The leaders who met with the doctors seeking their solidarity were not known but they had failed to respond to some questions raised by the doctors with regard to the on going intra party crisis, sources said.

The party has over 1,000 doctors who are members at various levels of the party hierarchy. Out of the total, those who attended to the incumbent leadership were very longtime members sources said adding that their decision to leave their patrons had caused a major setback to incumbent leaders. The meeting lasted over three hours and the incumbent leadership failed to convince the doctors that they were right, a senior doctor told The Island.

Some of the doctors present at the meeting were members of the JVP’s doctors’ union All Ceylon Government Medical Officers’ Association. The ACGMOA has a membership of 980 doctors who are not all JVP members. However, the majority of them too have severed their connections with the Somawansa faction and that too was announced at the yesterday’s meeting.

Doctors leaving the Somawansa faction could be a major blow to them as it indicates that professionals in the party too have now learnt the truth, a senior member for the dissident group said adding that yesterday’s incident was the first instance a member association of the trade union wing broke ranks.

Senior member of the JVP trade union wing former MP Wasantha Samarasinghe said that there was a meeting of doctors with the party’s General Secretary to discuss the party’s position with regard to the Private medical college in Malabe. He did not divulge the proceedings of the event.
