The Democratic People’s Front (DPF) — the third biggest force in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) — has given UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe time till today to respond to its leader Mano Ganeshan’s offer of support to bring stability through a majority council, DPF General Secretary, Dr. Nalliah Kumar Guruparan said.

He said that according to the Municipal Ordinance there is no room for any ‘ceremonial Opposition’ in the Council with both the ruling party and opposition sitting together.

He said that the party politburo had deliberated extensively before making this offer to Wickremesinghe so that he may abide by the decision of the majority of the people in Colombo who extended their support to the UNP giving it a mandate to administer the Council.

The DPF is a party that had no connections either with the UNP nor the UPFA in contesting the Colombo Municipal Council, he said. "We have a problem in aligning with the UPFA as the majority of the Tamil people have rejected it basically because it had failed in sincerely putting forward a political solution that would be acceptable to the minorities".

"We have an obligation by the people who placed their faith in us and voted for us to be victorious and be the third majority force in the council", he noted.

"UNP Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzzamil who has understood the value of the support of the six DPF members for good governance by a majority member council has made several overtures to us during the several rounds of discussions he held over the phone with Ganeshan", Guruparan said.

"As Wickremasinghe or General Secretary Tissa Attanayake had not responded strongly to the offer his support, we have decided to offer the Sunday deadline to the UNP leadership of, as we understand Muzzamil cannot decided on his own", he said.
