Police praised for restoring Chelva’s statue

The prompt action taken by the police to restore the statue of late Federal Party Leader S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, fondly known as ‘Thanthai Chelva’ a few hours after it was vandalized by an unidentified group, came in for praise from all sections of civil society especially the Tamil people of Trincomalee , residents said

Under the directions of Senior DIG Eastern Province Jagath Abeysirigunawardena that SP (1 ) Bandula Wijewardena of the Trincomalee Police Division assisted by personnel from the Police maintenance section had restored the headless statue on all Souls Day.

A ceremony had also been hastily organized by the police for the residents to garland the statue. This won the hearts and respect of all those who were concerned with reconciliation among the three communities living in Trincomalee , residents said

SP Wijewardena said police moved in fast to restore the statue at Sivan Kovil junction using the services of masons attached to the police department and Tamil sculptors .

Residents said that they hoped the exemplary action of such police officers to restore calm and build reconciliation should be brought to the notice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and IGP N. K. Illangakkon so that they would be a good example to fellow officers.
