Anuruddha passes away

Former Minister of Power and Energy, Deputy Defence Minister and Kandy District Member of Parliament, General Anuruddha Ratwatte passed away at the Kandy Hospital at 11.55 a.m yesterday. He was 73 years old.

Ratwatte was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, since Monday (21) night. He had been rushed there following a fall at his Anniewatte residence the same night.

Gen. Ratwatte leaves his wife Carman and sons Lohan (Kandy District MP), Mahendra (Mayor of Kandy) and Chanuka.

Gen. Ratwatte, son of late Parliamentarian Harris Leuke Ratwatte, began his political career as a member of the Kandy Municipal Council. He was elected to the Kandy Municipal Council in 1964.

He took to national politics in 1989 entering parliament. In 1994 he was appointed Minister of Power and Energy and Deputy Minister of Defence in the Chandrika Kumaratunga Cabinet.

He was instrumental in launching the successful Operation Riviresa, which liberated the Jaffna from the LTTE.

His remains will lie at the ancestral residence at Mahayaya, Katugastota Road, Kandy.

Cremation takes place at the family burial grounds in Nittawala, Kandy on Sunday (27) at 4 p.m.
