The much awaited meeting of the JVP’s 23-member Central Committee (CC) is scheduled to be held tomorrow (29) at the Party head office in Pelawatte.
Letters notifying the event have been couriered to all 23 CC members by the party General Secretary Tilvin Silva.
Some members of the dissident group led by Kumar Gunaratnam alias Kumar Mahattaya have accepted the letters while some others including S. K. Subasinghe of Polonnaruwa turned down the invitations, party sources said. This is the first CC meeting after the party’s split.
The next JVP convention to elect high ranking party officials is likely to be held in the first week of January next year, according to sources.
Spokesman for the dissident group, Pubudu Jagoda, was not available for comment but had sent an SMS that they were consulting lawyers over the invitation to the Central Committee meeting. He would be in a position to comment only on Monday, his text message said. Sources said the dissidents were likely to move the courts against the scheduled CC meeting.
The letters have been sent to the home addresses of the Central Committee members S. K.Subasinghe, Dimuthu Attigalle, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Nihal Galappatti, Lakshman Nipunaarachchi, Duminda Nagamuwa, Bimal Ratnayake, Chameera Koswatte, Mahinda Jayasinghe, Ajith Kumara, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Waruna Rajapaksa, Jinadasa Kitulegoda, Sunil Handunetti, Samantha Vidyaratne, K. D. Lalkantha, G. Kularatne, Vijitha Herath, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Dimuthu Abeykoon, Pubudu Jagoda and party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe. The JVP General Secretary is also a member of the CC.
Both the Somawansa faction and dissidents claim they command the support of the majority of the CC members.
