Cricket and Ministry bigwigs discuss on way forward

The Ministry of Sports would like to state that the Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage convened the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Selection Committee, senior players and SLC administration to discuss how the national cricket team can be strengthened sighting the drawbacks faced by the team in recent tournaments, starting from the series against England, Australia and Pakistan.

Senior players such as Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Captain Tillekeratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews were present along with the members of the National Selection Committee, comprising its Chairman Duleep Mendis and SLC CEO Ajit Jayasekara.

The meeting was held in an open and friendly manner aiming at the future of cricket in Sri Lanka.

It was revealed that the main reason as to why the national cricket team failed to perform overseas was due to the miscommunication between the team, the selectors and the coaches.

It was discussed in detail the importance and the necessity for skipper Dilshan to maintain sound communication with the cricket selectors and the coach. The Minister of Sports too emphasised the importance of communication between the team and the coaches.

It was further discussed that in the future, when the National Selection Committee does its team selections, it should be done in a manner to build trust among the players.

The senior players thanked the Minister of Sports for convening a meeting in which they were able to speak openly and freely with the Selection Committee as well as the cricket administrators.

They further assured the Minister that they would help Captain Dilshan in every possible way to fulfill his duties as the skipper of the National team in the forthcoming tours including that of South Africa.

Udaya R. Seneviratne, Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and the Competent Authority of SLC, Brendon Kuruppu and Don Arunasiri, members of the National selection panel, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Sports were also present at this meeting. (A media release)
