MR intervenes to resettle evicted IDPs

A dispute over the recent eviction of a group of people by security authorities from some parts of Talaimannar, on the basis that they were squatting on State land, was settled through presidential intervention.

Mannar Divisional Secretary Mrs. Stanley de Mel yesterday told The Island that those evicted had been given permission to return to their land as President Rajapaksa had intervened after Industry and Commerce Minister, Rishard Bathiudeen brought the plight of the affected to his notice.

Responding to a query, de Mel said that about 550 resettled IDP families had been ordered to move out early this month after being accused of grabbing State land. They were subsequently accused of seizing land belonging to the Land Reforms Commission (LRC).
