The Lak Vijaya or the Norochcholai Power Plant in Puttalam was back in operation yesterday after the internal fire which erupted around 1.30 a.m. yesterday was extinguished.

Ceylon Electricity Board Chairman Professor Wimaladharma Abeywickrema told The Island yesterday that there was no major damage despite the fire.

He said a fire inside the coal crushing machine forced a temporary shut down of the plant in the morning and afternoon hours.

In August this year too, a fire erupted at Norochcholai.

The employees of the power plant had managed to extinguish the fire.

Nobody was reported injured in the fire.

Last time, the fire, which reportedly broke out in the coal storage of the main kiln, was contained.

A fire occurred in October 2010 as well in the premises of the island’s first coal power plant.

The USD 450 million coal power plant, which adds 300 megawatts to the national energy grid, commenced operations at the beginning of this year.
