Wimal wants Ranil suspended

Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday called for the suspension from Parliament of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for removing his tie inside the Chamber on Tuesday, in protest when he was disallowed from making a statement in the House.

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkoday said he would inquire into the matter and see if Opposition Leader Wickremesinghe had acted in violation of Standing Orders by his actions.

The Opposition Leader removed his tie as he walked out of the Chamber on Tuesday after the Speaker said he could not make a special statement in the House which government members said referred to a matter before the Court.

However, he will be allowed to make an amended statement to the House today. (SI)
