Bus owners not
satisfied with 2.2 pc hike

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Private Transport Ministry Secretary Victor Samaraweera yesterday told The Island that Minister C. B. Ratnayaka had already submitted a private bus fare revision to the Cabinet for approval with a 2.2 per cent increase.

When contacted, Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne said LPBOA would never agree to a 2.2 per cent hike as it wanted an increase of 3.5 per cent.

Samaraweera said that at the last meeting Minister C. B. Ratnayaka held with LPBOA, he had asked Wijeratne to reconsider the fare hike. Minister Ratnayaka had explained to Gemunu that it was impossible to increase fares by 3.5 per cent and asked him to consider a 2.2 per cent hike.

Wijeratne said the LPBOA took a decision during the last meeting with Minister Ratnayaka to call off the scheduled bus strike based on certain promises. But Minister Ratnayaka had not kept the promises.

He said the LPBOA would have no alternative but to take stronger trade union
