Masked thugs assault suspended school child and her parents

Their crime was to speak to national media

A nine-year-old child and her parents, who recently complained to the media about her being suspended from school, by the principal because they could not afford to pay the annual fee to pay the salaries of school security guards, had been brutally assaulted by a group of masked men at Ketagal Ara in Embilipitiya yesterday.

Susili Sandamali, a grade four student of Ketagal Ara Vidyalaya, had been suspended from the school about four months back as her parents who are eking a living as labourers had been unable to pay the annual school security fee of Rs1,200.She had been kicked out of school after the parents had informed the Principal of their inability to pay the annual fee.

After they brought her predicament to the notice of the national media they had been subjected to various types of harassment and yesterday it culminated with a physical assault.

Sandamali, her mother W. Rohini and father W. A. Piyasena are now being treated at the Embilipitiya Base Hospital. Embilipitiya Headquarters police is inquiring into the assault.
