The Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Dharshika Wimalasiri recently refused bail to two suspects who were charged with sexually abusing a New Zealand national, in the premises of the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, after showing her pornographic material loaded in a mobile phone belonging to them.

The attorneys-at-law appearing for the suspects, Chandana Weeraratne Waduge alias ‘Kudu Ukkuwa’ and Warnakulasuriya Ruwan Kumara Medis alias ‘Kaha Ruwan’ told Court that their clients were innocent and a false complaint had been lodged against them.

The police said that the victim had lodged a hand written complaint at the Mihintale police against the two suspects who were tourist guide helpers.

The Judge, examining the document, said that the complainant, a female teacher from New Zealand had no reason to lodge a false complaint and that she had reason to believe that the suspects were involved in the offence

The Judge ordered the police to submit a motion to the Court if they were able to trace the complainant who was touring the country.

When contacted, the President of the Institute of National Tour Guide Lecturers, Joe Livera said that the two persons in question were not tour guides or members of the association.
