A large number of UNPers demonstrated opposite the Ratmalana office of Mohan Lal Grero yesterday protesting against his decision to cross over to the government during the budget debate in parliament on Wednesday.

Grero was appointed a Monitoring MP of the Education Ministry, by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, but he has yet to obtain SLFP membership.

The UNP members in the Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council, were joined by a large number of their supporters who protested and shouted slogans denouncing Grero’s action, which they said was a betrayal of the voters and the UNP, on which ticket, he was elected to parliament.

The UNP’s Deputy General Secretary Jayalath Jayawardena said that Grero by crossing over to the government, had violated the trust placed in him by the people.

By and large the masses vote for the party first and then for the candidate. So, to change sides without obtaining the peoples approval at an election, was unethical and tantamount to delivering a slap, Jayawardena observed.

Chief Opposition Whip John Ameratunga, while admitting that there had been some internal problems leading to Grero’s defection, alleged that the Rajapaksa regime had pressurized him over issues concerning his business interests as well.

A disciplinary inquiry would be instituted; he said adding that the party will exercise its rights.
