Dr. Geethanjana Mendis, who was sacked as the head of the Sports Medical Unit by Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage, has been appointed an advisor to the Minister of Higher Education, S. B. Dissanayake, who is a former Minister of Sports.

The Sports Medical Unit which also housed Sri Lanka’s Anti-Doping Unit came under heavy criticism from various quarters following a series of positive doping cases involving top Sri Lankan sportsmen. The controversial Anti-Doping Unit was also criticized by Aluthgamage.

"We have received numerous serious complaints from sports personnel and sports associations that individuals at the unit (Anti-Doping Unit) provided banned substances," Aluthgamage was quoted as having said.

Aluthgamage eventually dismissed Mendis in a bid to initiate a drive to eradicate the drug menace.

Incidentally, the doctor who was sacked by the incumbent Sports Minister has been appointed as an adviser to the former Sports Minister S.B. Dissanayake who is the Minister of Higher Education.

Mendis has been appointed on December 14.
