Ranabima Baseball Club defeated Old Royalists 11-9 to capture the National Open Knockout Baseball Championship, organised by Sri Lanka Amateur Baseball/Softball Association (SLABSA) and sponsored for the first time by LG Abans (Pvt) Ltd., worked off at Colombo university grounds, on Sunday.

Both teams failed to take a firm grip of the proceedings and hence the advantage of the match fluctuated throughout the match. At one stage, Ranabima led by six points to three, but the Old Royalists dominated the next phase to score six unanswered points to take back the lead. At 6-9 down, Ranabima was up against it, but fought back to take the match and the title. The winner’s fielding was a crucial factor in their triumph which was strong throughout.

In the third place pay off, Maroons beat Sri Lanka Army 2-0, where Shalitha Perera of Maroons belted a home run. Ranabima qualified for the final earlier in the day by toppling Maroons 5-1 and SL Army was the victim of the Old Royalists 11-4 in the other semi-final.
