Danny Hittetiyage’s assassin ran extortion racket from Galle prison

An associate of a suspect held in connection with the assassination of Southern Provincial Council Minister Danny Hittetiyage a few years ago is in custody over an alleged extortion racket.

Karandeniya police nabbed the suspect in the act of receiving a parcel containing Rs. 50,000 from a businessman.

Following a complaint lodged by the businessman that Sunil Premaratne alias Eta Indika held at the Galle remand prison had demanded Rs. 300,000 from him, the police laid a trap for the mastermind’s accomplice. After advising the complainant to meet the man, who would come to collect the money on behalf of Eta Indika, the police pounced on the suspect as he was accepting the money.

The businessman had persuaded Eta Indika to accept part of the money as he was not in a position to pay Rs. 300,000. The police also took into custody a three wheeler, in which the suspect travelled.

The police said that Eta Indika, who had been in remand at the Galle prison for three years, had called the businessmen using a mobile phone and demanded the money.
