Grieving mother asks youth to heed the law

First fatal accident on Expressway

Mother of the youth who was killed in an accident on the Southern Expressway in the early hours of yesterday appealed to all to advise youths to respect highway rules and be careful when driving.

"Careless mistake would lead to fatal accidents," she said.

She said her son travelled from Matara to Colombo every Friday, but this week he returned on Thursday.

The 26 – year – old victim, Arosha Shehan Cooray’s vehicle skidded due to excessive speeding and he was thrown out of the vehicle, according to police sources.

He had died on the spot after his head hit a rock.

An old boy of Ananda College, Cooray who was working in the Matara branch of a private telecommunication company, was living on Church Road, Dehiwela.

The accident took place near the 21.5 mile post and the damaged vehicle was brought to the Kalutara North Police station after the accident.

It was also the first fatality on the expressway since it opened on Nov. 28 last year.
