Mysterious death of couple in Wellawatte apartment
Murder and suicide suspected
by Hemantha Randunu and Suresh Abeydheera in Wellawatte
Wellawatte Police yesterday retrieved the bodies of an aged couple, who were found dead mysteriously at 'Toronto' inside a multi-storied building down 37th Lane, Wellawatte.
The deceased were 69-year-old P. K. Sathiananthan, an American citizen, who it was revealed had committed suicide after killing his paramour, 32-year-old Balasubramanium Shermila. Police said that Sathianathan had hung himself with a rope which was tied to a wire fixed to the ceiling of the apartment.
Police said that the body of the dead woman was found on the bed but there were no external injuries on her body.
The dead woman, a resident of Kilinochchi, had been living with the alleged killer for the last three years in the apartment. A resident of 37th Lane had phoned the Police emergency at around 2.30 a.m. and said that there had been a fire in the building in question. Wellawatte OIC Samarakoon Banda, Crimes OIC Nuwan Bandutilleke and other officers had intimated the fire brigade and rushed to the scene.
They had seen a fire on the fourth storey of that building and the fire brigade, after dousing the fire, had found the two bodies. Police also said that Sathiyanathan's legal wife was in the United States and that he had been living here with his paramour for the last three years. The front door of the apartment had been bolted from inside and there was no question of even suspicion of someone coming from outside to kill the couple.
