A draw in Jaffna

106th ‘Battle of the North’


Junies Kanistan anchored the late-order batting with a determined 72 runs for Central College to force a draw to the 106th Battle of the North Big Match against St. John’s College in Jaffna yesterday.

Commencing from the overnight score of 76 for three, still trailing by 17 runs, middle-order bat R. Vathushanan (51) and Junies Kanistan (72) scored the bulk of the runs while P. Darvin and S. Sowmitharan played marathon innings scoring patiently for Central to bat the whole day.

They posted 289 for nine at close. P. Darvin scored 26 in 146 balls while Sowmitharan faced 122 balls to add just six runs to the total. This was after St. John’s posted 237 in reply to their first innings score of 144 runs.

Central batted the whole day yesterday after commencing their innings on Friday evening. They had batted for 138 overs in their 2nd innings.
