Reveal LLRC recommendations to be implemented - UNP

Publish LLRC Report in Sinhala, Tamil

The government should reveal which of the LLRC recommendations it intends implementing without continuing with its bluff game, the UNP said yesterday.

Harin Fernando MP, addressing a press conference in Colombo, said that the government, having failed in its bid to prevent the UNHRC vote against Sri Lanka, was now playing its old records hoping to buy more time. But, it was making a huge mistake since non-implementation of all the LLRC recommendations, could lead to sanctions and it was the people who would suffer.

Having lost the US Resolution on Accountability and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka by 24 to 15 votes, with eight countries abstaining, some Ministers were claiming that the difference was just one vote.

Based on such arithmetic it could be said that Mahinda Rajapaksa lost the last two Presidential Elections, because he had obtained less than 5 million of the 14 million Sri Lankan votes.

He said that 40 nations had co-sponsored the US Resolution, including countries such as the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand and Spain, who are not members of the UNHRC.

The LLRC Report, Fernando said, should also be published in Sinhala and Tamil without any further delay, because all the people have a right to know its contents.

The Government claims that it did not require the oppositions support to implement the LLRC recommendations. This only goes to prove its authoritarian and dictatorial nature right from the day it assumed office, he observed.

Responding to Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s call for early elections, Fernando said that the UNP was ready for the challenge.
