Fifty Five Chinese experts working on A-9 highway

Fifty five Chinese engineers and professional technicians are among those employed in the rehabilitation work of the Kandy–Jaffna A 9 highway, Parliament was informed yesterday.

Two contracts have been awarded for the construction of the highway, one at an estimated cost of Rs 9,592 million (without VAT) from the Galkulama to Panichchankulam segment while the other contract has been given at an estimated cost of Rs 9,532 million for the Panichchankulama to Jaffna segment.

Both contacts were awarded in February 2011 and due to be completed around the middle of 2013, Deputy Minister of Highways Nirmala Kotalawala said in response to a question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayaka.

In addition to these costs, the labour costs of each phase of the A 9 rehabilitation project had been estimated at around Rs 1, 1500 million.

At present the local staff on the project consists of 1,857 direct employees and 730 indirect employees, the reply said. (SI)
