* Central bus terminal has gone to the rats
by Don Asoka Wijewardena
Deputy Transport Minister Rohana Dissanayaka was dismayed when he was greeted with the sight of hundreds of rats running about the Pettah Central bus stand during a recent surprise midnight visit.
The purpose of his visit was to check whether all private and CTB buses were operating according to the timetable. He was accompanied by CTB General Manager Janaka Senaratne.
Deputy Minister Dissanayaka told The Island that although timetables had been available for the operation of private buses, competition between them and the CTB had caused problems for commuters. Speeding to pick up passengers had resulted in accidents which killed and injured passengers as well as pedestrians, he said.
He said that he would send circulars to all CTB depots not to compete with private buses. He would also ask the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association to instruct all private bus drivers to stop competing against the CTB.
He also said the rat menace in the Central Bus Stand had resulted in bus seats being damaged and engine wires being chewed up. He would instruct the General Manager to take measures to eliminate the rat menace.
