Maid suspected of bludgeoning her employee to death arrested

The Police, investigating the killing of an 86-year-old retired teacher, who had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer inside her home, at Kolonnawa early this week, have arrested the maid who served the victim.


After the arrest she had allegedly admitted to killing her employee and decamping with more than 500,000 rupees worth of jewellery from the house.


The woman suspect had visited a jewellery shop in Matale to sell the gold jewellery but the shop keeper, out of suspicion, had informed the Matale police about her. The Matale police had taken the woman into custody and questioned her. Though she had not divulged anything pertaining to murder and robbery, Matale HQI Keerthi Ranaweera had dispatched the details of the woman suspect to all police stations countrywide.


The Mirihana police, investigating the gruesome killing and wanting to trace the woman suspect, on seeing the police alert, had visited Matale and made the arrest and during interrogation the woman divulged more details.


The 57-year-old suspect had served several in houses in and around Colombo. Police found two NICs in her possession.


The victim, a retired teacher, lived in her two-storeyed house, at Wellampitiya in Kolonnawa, alone and was killed on April 24. The suspect woman had also told police that after having escaped with money and jewellery belonging to the teacher, she took refuge at a relative’s house in Matale.
