Bandula promises libraries to schools countrywide

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the ministry would launch a new programme to develop libraries in government schools country wide, including neglected Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Speaking to ‘The Island’, minister Gunawardena said that new libraries would be set up under the programme in schools without proper library facilities.

According to the minister, the younger generation were turned away from reading as a result of most schools not maintaining a proper library.

Gunawardena said that the situation was worse in the Northern and Eastern Provinces as the government earlier had no access to those schools due to the war.

"Human and physical resources were developed in the government schools to cater to the modern world during the last few years, but the library facility had been neglected in most schools," he said.

Gunawardena said that the ministry would develop the school libraries with the assistance of the National Libraries and Documentation Board.

The government had already launched the ‘Sapiri Pasal’ project to develop 1000 selected schools countrywide and all selected schools would get a state-of-them-art library under the project, he said.

To produce more writers in the country, the minister said that they would start a programme to assist young writers too.
