Samurdhi animators to boycott May Day

The Samurdhi animators’ union has decided not to attend the UPFA May Day rally this year in protest against the government’s delay in resolving their grievances.

The Samurdhi animators, who usually attend the government May Day rally, had taken this decision to bring to the notice of top officials their displeasure over authorities ignoring the problems faced by them for years, General Secretary of the All Ceylon United Samurdhi Development Officials’ Union, Lalith Priyantha said.

"The officials have continued to make false promises and we are fed up with such promises. We, for the past few years, have been demanding that the service be standardised. The officials promised to bring in an Act of Parliament and a Service Minute to recognize our service. We serve with no prospect of retirement benefits. Apart from that there are many other problems related to our jobs but none of them had been solved or at least an initiative taken to redress our grievances," he said.

Priyantha said that there were more than 25,000 Samurdhi officials countrywide and his union commanded the support of a majority of them. The union would next consider resorting to a severe course of action in future if the government did not respond to their decision to boycott this year’s May Day rallies, he added.
