Youthful Malaysia thrash Sri Lanka 6-0

Malaysia, lacking many of their stars, still managed to annihilate Sri Lanka 6-0, in the international friendly played at the Shah Alam Stadium, Selengor, on Saturday.

Hazwan Bakri was the hero for Malaysia as he made a sudden 20 minute impact completing a hat-trick, after Zack Haikal set Malaysia on the way with a brace in the first half. This was Sri Lanka’s first match of the tour of Malaysia and after a scrappy opening where the Sri Lankans seemingly had the upper hand, the young stars of Malaysia warmed up the match, crushing the clueless islanders.

With 25 minutes gone, Wan Zack Haikal opened the floodgates after an assist by Safiq Rahim. The duo united again to put Malaysia 2-0 up before half time, in a mirror image of the first goal. Substitute Hazwan Bakri put the match beyond any doubt with 20 minutes remaining and yet the show was not over. Bakri pouched on a loose ball in the box after the initial cross from Abu Samah, to make it 4-0.

Depleted Sri Lanka was wishing for the final whistle by this time and to compound the shock, Azimudin was on hand to scramble home Malaysia’s 5th, after a free kick hit the woodwork. There was time for Bakri to score his third when he met a Rahim cross to send a vicious header into the top corner.

The Sri Lankans, led by Ratnam’s E. B. Channa and coach Sampath Perera would love to forget this kick in the posterior when they face hosts Selengor FC at the same venue today. (CP)

Scores: Malaysia 6 (Bakri 3, Haikal 2, Azimudin) - 0 Sri Lanka.
