Coastguard saves a drunk man drowning off Galle Face
May 20, 2012, 10:32 pmA drowning 24-year-old youth was rescued by the coastguard life savers near Galle Face on Saturday evening.
Ananda Mudiyanselage Bandula Samarawickrama from Waralketiya, Pitiyakumbura, Bambarapana while bathing in the sea around 4:50 pm was dragged away by a strong current.
The life savers of the coastguard on duty swung into action and saved him. He was 75 metres from the shore and struggling to swim back unsuccessfully, when the much needed help came.
Seaman T.M.G.S. Thilakaratne rescued the minor employee of a private company in Colombo and brought him ashore for first aid. He was found drunk at the time and after being given first aid he recovered. Later he was handed over to police personnel on duty at Galle Face.
This was the 17th drowning person rescued by the Coastguard since its inception, out of which five were foreigners.
