SLN’s Weligama bay hotel project causes controversy

A hotel project launched by the Navy, at Mirissa on the Southern coast, has led to accusations that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was using SLN personnel and resources to build a hotel for himself. Sources said that some of those operating hotels on the Southern coast and other interested parties had accused the Navy of carrying out private jobs.

In the wake of protests, The Island raised the issue with SLN headquarters yesterday and was told that the project was one of a series undertaken at the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009. The official emphasized that the Defence Secretary wasn’t involved in the project and nothing could be further from the truth. An SLN spokesman said that the hotel project at Weligama bay would promote tourism in the area. The facility, which was being constructed at a cost of Rs. 38 mn, comprised 14 units, a swimming pool and a range of other facilities, the official said. According to him, the SLN’s welfare funds were spent on this project and once opened, it would generate much needed funds for the service. (SF)
