Kandy MC wants Fonseka’s civic rights restored

KANDY – Leader of the Opposition in the Kandy Municipal Council Neranjan Wijeyeratne (UNP) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Council member M. C. M. A. Marikar, on Wednesday afternoon moved that former army commander Sarath Fonseka should be granted full freedom including a restoration of his civic rights.


Deputy Mayor Sena Dissanayake chaired the meeting.


Wijeyaratne said that Sarath Fonseka, who contributed largely towards winning the war against terrorism and restoring peace should be granted unconditional freedom.


He also expressed his appreciation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to pardon the former army chief.


Marikar said that he was pleased that former army commander was released despite the allegations levelled against him during the Presidential elections.


However, Sarath Fonseka should be granted full freedom and his support obtained for the development process of the country, Marikar added.
