Havies in unimpressive 33-10 win over Police

Havelocks Sports Club were stretched by Police Sports Club before the visitors to Police Park pulled off a 33-10 win yesterday which was also the curtain raiser to the Dialog sponsored Inter-club league rugby tournament.

Havelocks looked a solid team on paper, but took the entire first half to settle down. The Park Club players opened up in the second half, aided by several errors caused by Police, and ran away with the game outscoring the host team by four tries to one. The winners led 6-0, thanks to two penalties which were kicked over by Mohammed Sheriff.

The first half was scrappy and both teams showed little respect for each other. The referee had to caution the two teams after they were involved in two fisticuffs. The scuffles were quickly brought under control by referee Aruna Rankothge.

Havies extended the lead in the second half very early with a solid run by winger Chamara Dabare which was followed by touchdowns from prop Dhanushka Priyadharshana, centre Dinesh Kumara and one more by Dabare.

Police played in flashes and when everything clicked they crossed the line through Shanaka Kumara and prop D.Sivananda.

Havelocks SC expatriate Nissan Aitui excelled in the loose and so did Police players Josh Goldsmith (lock) and Sam Aolale (Fly half). Aolale was booked by the referee for a yellow card offense in the second half.

Mohammed Sheriff did the honours in the kicking department for the winners. (RN)
