The attempted escape from the Welikada prison by three hardcore criminals, of the Chapel D-3 Cell, was foiled when an alert guard fired at them from a watch tower early yesterday morning, a prison source told The Island.
The three convicts, two of whom were serving life sentences, had dug a tunnel to get out of the cell they were in and had used sarongs given to them as night wear to make a rope to climb over the wall. When one of them attempted to scale the wall, while the other
two watched, a guard at a watch tower spotted it and fired three shots at the man scaling the wall.
The prisoner who was shot and injured as he scaled the wall was identified as Rizmi, serving a twelve year sentence. The other two were identified as Mole Chuti serving a sentence for murder and Nazlim also serving a life sentence.
The injured criminal had been admitted to prison hospital at Welikada. It was also learned that the Commissioner General of Prisons, P. W. Kodippili too had visited the prison after hearing the incident in the evening and a special investigation was being carried out by the prisons department.
