Farmers exempted from crate  law - Johnny

No action would be taken against farmers for not using plastic crates, as the new law applied only to those who transported vegetables, Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando told Parliament yesterday.

"Only large scale vegetable and fruit transporters, who send produce to the main markets and economic centers, have to use plastic crates," Minister Fernando said in response to a question raised by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera.

The minister said only 28 varieties of fruits and vegetables had to be transported in plastic crates.

About  150,000 plastic crates had been distributed countrywide, since 2006, with the intention of saving 9,000 million kilos of vegetables, destroyed annually due to inappropriate transport methods, Minister Fernando said. (SI)
