Human Resources Senior Minister D. E. W. Gunasekera yesterday said that Parliament must take action against open warrant criminals who move around freely with impunity.

Participating in the condolence vote on former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, he said that the rule of law was not upheld in a society where open warrant criminals move around freely. "Parliament must take into serious notice and consideration the statements made by judges in courts that open warrant criminals are evading arrest. The Parliament must take action in this regard".

"Former MP Premachandra was assassinated. This killing culture is a by-product of the political culture introduced to this country by the 1978 Constitution, which promoted new liberal economic policies and the preferential vote system," he said adding that if Hirunika Premachandra plans to enter politics, she should be well aware of the prevailing political phenomenon.
